The Middle East in Context: Energy, Palestine and the Historical Present
Saturday 11 October
Unitarian Chapel
1.00pm
History involves not simply the effort to explain ‘how we got here’ but also the battle over how to determine the relevant context for any particular issue. Henry Clements and Katayoun Shafiee consider how to contextualize the contemporary situation of the Middle East.
They will consider the most pressing issues facing the region in its contemporary global context – specifically the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, with an eye toward the energy politics in the region – and reflect on how particular historical contexts can and should shape our present understanding. Their aim is both to historicize the contemporary political situation and to reflect upon the politics of history – history not merely as a tool for analysis, but part of the power struggles that structure the region in the present.
