England’s Maecenas: Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester as a Cultural Patron
Tuesday 6 October
Great Hall, Lord Leycester Hospital
10.30am
Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, was more than just an ambitious courtier and Elizabeth I’s life-long favourite. He was also one of the most important patrons of art and literature throughout the Elizabethan age, dubbed ‘England’s Maecenas’ by multiple scholars.
Well-educated and enthusiastic about both European and English cultural advancement, Leicester was, perhaps, not as single-minded as popular narratives sometimes depict him to be, for his cultural goals are almost always intertwined with the political.
Corina Apostu explores why he put so much of his energy into patronising artists and writers. What were his goals and what were the impacts of his efforts?
