Guy of Warwick: The Making of a Local Legend
Monday 30 September
Castle Hill Baptist Church
10.30am
He was England’s other King Arthur, so why is Guy of Warwick less well-known today than in the medieval period?
Starting with the origins of Gui de Warewic in the 1200s, local historian Aaron Manning charts the change and continuity in the ‘history’ of Guy of Warwick, from international fame in the medieval world to the demise of his popularity during the Renaissance, rebranding during the Enlightenment, then a resurgent interest in his adventures during the early 1900s.
This talk will explore how the legend has been abused by powerful magnates, embellished by Tudor kings, admired by the masses and, ultimately, why the story has been largely forgotten in the modern world.
Aaron is a historian of Warwick Castle and the earls of Warwick and is a Director of Warwick Words.
