Saints: A New Legendary of Heroes, Humans and Magic
Tuesday 1 October
Castle Hill Baptist Church
2.00pm
From the Sunday Times bestselling author, Amy Jeffs, comes a sweeping new legendary of miracles, magic, human frailty and heroic strength.
Saints’ legends suffused medieval European culture, from west to east. Their suffering and wonder-working shaped landscapes, rituals and folk beliefs. Their tales spoke of men raised by wolves, women communing with flocks of birds and severed heads calling from between bristling paws.
In Saints, Amy retells legends from the medieval cult of saints, drawing on ‘official’ lives, vernacular romances, artworks and obscene poetry, from the fourth to the sixteenth centuries. Amy’s book considers enduring super-saints such as Brigid, George, Patrick and Michael, plus some whose legends are less well known, and is illustrated with over thirty original paper cutouts by the author.
